SKIN CANCER - Most Preventable Cancer! Research is showing us that over-exposure to the sun, from early childhood to adulthood, is a major cause of skin cancer! (Tanning beds are also a new cause of skin cancer!) No sun tan is a safe tan!

Every sunburn has the potential to cause cancer later in life! So...    Avoid over-exposure; avoid over exposure,     especially in the heat of the day (11 to 3). Slip on a cover-up -- shirt, sarong, etc. Slop on sunscreen (apply often!)

Slap on a hat! (wide brims protect) Wrap on sunglasses!  Over-exposure to the sun causes skin to wrinkle!

May also cause glaucoma (thus the sunglasses!) For more sun safe tips, games for children, visit SUN GUARDMAN!

The American Cancer Society now has a sister organization: ACS CAN!  ACS Community Action Network.

This is a membership organization. Just $5/year. It's primary purpose is to inform the public of legislative issues on

federal, state, and local levels.  Legislative Ambassadors have been recruited, and are always being recruited.

Want to know where your legislator stands on cancer issues? Want to know how your legislator voted on cancer budget items? Want to know what legislation has been introduced to reduce your insurance coverage for cancer screenings?

Contact ACS CAN Legislative Ambassador: Anna -- amrenault@yahoo.com or call 410-391-8260.

TallGalMD - The US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was designed  by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. It is important that we take a stand against this disease that kills and maims so many of our mothers, sisters, and friends. Instead of the normal $.37 for a stamp, this one costs $.45. The additional $.08 will go to breast cancer research. A "normal" book costs $7.40, this is $9.00. It takes a minute at the Post Office and means so much. If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $35,000,000 for this vital research.  Many of us know women and their families whose lives are turned upside-down by breast cancer. It takes so little to do so much.  I urge you to go out and purchase some of these stamps!

YOUR WALLET

READ & PRINT OUT , PASS ALONG TO YOUR FAMILY, and DO!!!!

Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine or your scanner and copy both sides of each license, credit card, etc. You will know what you had in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to call and cancel in case it gets lost, or worse yet, stolen. Keep the photocopy in a safe place.

1. As everyone always advises, cancel your credit cards immediately, but the key is having the toll free numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep those where you can find the easily.

2. File a police report immediately the jurisdiction where it was stolen, this proves to credit providers you were diligent, and is a first step toward an investigation (if there ever is one).

3. But here's what is perhaps most important (I never thought to do this). Call the three national credit reporting organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and SS# (And call the Social Security fraud line). I had never heard of doing that until advised by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made over the Internet in my name.

      Equifax: 1-800-525-6285

Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742              Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289

Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271

The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

IS YOUR PHONE NUMBER ONLINE?

Take a look at the note below - if you go to www.google.com and type in your telephone number it will actually pull up directions to your house - there is a way to have your number removed. Many people are unaware of this danger.  I was, in fact! Go to www.google.com then type in your phone number (separated by hyphens, including area code) and click on Google Search.  If your phone number is listed it will show your name and address and give you two map options.  Yahoo and MapQuest.  See how accurate the map is to your home.  VERY SCARY!!! Any person wishing to discover the physical location of a phone number, be it a home or business address, could use this feature to locate a physical street address, and receive directions on how to get there from anywhere in the country.  In the age of the internet communication we all know the dangers of this - for adults and CHILDREN! Google has made available an option that will allow anyone to REMOVE their telephone number from the database that is linked to the mapping feature. You will first need to check if your number is listed in this manner by attempting a search-entering your full telephone number separated by dashes (e.g. 555-555-5555).  If the number appears in the mapping database, an icon resembling a telephone will appear next to the first or second entry on the results page.  Clicking on this icon will take you to a page containing a description of the service, and a link to request your number be removed from the database. So far unlisted numbers and cell phone numbers, do not show up. Happy searching! Be safe!
